Well, if we're heading to the incredible Chobe River on the Pangolin Voyager, photography will undoubtedly be a top priority! My ideal packing list would lean heavily towards capturing the stunning wildlife and landscapes this region is famous for.
First and foremost, a versatile camera body is essential. Something with good low-light performance and a decent frames-per-second capability would be perfect for capturing both those early morning golden hour shots and any fast-moving wildlife encounters.
Lens-wise, I'd definitely want a good telephoto zoom lens – something in the range of 100-400mm or even a bit longer would be fantastic for getting close to the elephants, hippos, and incredible birdlife without disturbing them. A wider zoom lens, perhaps in the 24-70mm range, would be ideal for capturing the broader landscapes, the river itself, and even some shots of the houseboat.
Plenty of extra batteries and memory cards are non-negotiable – you never want to miss a shot! A polarizing filter would be useful for reducing glare on the water and enhancing colors.
Beyond the main gear, I'd also pack a comfortable camera bag that offers good protection from the elements and allows for easy access to my equipment. A lens cleaning kit is always handy.
When it comes to clothing – pack light and comfortable. A hat for the harsh sun, a light jersey or jacket, just in case the evenings are cooler. The boat supplies warm poncho’s for colder weather and if there is rain.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly for a houseboat adventure, I'd bring a sense of excitement and patience! Wildlife photography often requires waiting for the right moment, but the rewards in a place as beautiful and teeming with life as Chobe are always worth it.
